Russia Study Tour

In April 2018, a group of 30 participants consisting of MBA and MSc students and alumni spent a week in Moscow. This was a unique opportunity for them to experience business, social, and cultural life in Russia and to explore Russia’s future development in the context of the significant strategic, economic, and business initiatives that are currently occurring in Central Asia.

Students learned from professionals and experts from six rapidly advancing industries in Russia via visits to state-owned enterprises, private companies, and MNCs, including TeleSystems (MTC) (Telecom), Novartis (Healthcare), Novatek (Oil & Gas), RUSAL (Infrastructure), Google (Technology), Vnesheconombank, and Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange (Finance). RUSAL, the only HK listed Russian company representing the aluminum industry shared about sustainability as the core of its business. It was inspiring to see well-established companies who are leaders in their industries still making strong efforts to diversify their businesses, not being satisfied with what they had achieved thus far. These visits allowed participants to learn about Russia’s business environment and how the Belt and Road Initiative creates opportunities for these companies.

An introductory class hosted by professors from the Skolkovo School of Management provided some background for students to get a taste of Russian culture and to dig deeper into the history of this resourceful nation. On the final day of the study tour, participants shared their meaningful experiences and key takeaways.

It was a bonus to meet alumni Alexey Astafev, Olga Kuznetsova, and Yulia Adamskaya. Thanks are due to Yulia for her kind assistance in organizing the trip and to Prof. Mitya New for making this study tour a memorable one!

RUSAL is the world’s second largest aluminum company by primary production. It has launched various projects related to sustainability.

USA Study Tour

Led by Prof. Roger Chen, 28 MBA students and alumni of diverse nationalities and industry backgrounds participated in a 5-day US study tour with the theme “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” in early June 2018. The group visited the San Francisco Bay Area, a hub of innovation, to learn about the business environment, culture, and ecosystem.

The tour kicked off with the student team’s presentation, during which they briefly gave background information to the visiting companies. The group had the opportunity to visit 10 companies, including start-ups such as Zum and GoPro, MNCs such as Intel and JPMorgan, co-working spaces such as Plug and Play and UpHonest Capital, and Googleplex.

Visiting Google was among the group’s best experiences. The group first had lunch at one of Google’s food outlets with HK Google Volunteers who then showed them around the campus, and the tour ended with an hour of sharing about Google’s culture and talent acquisition. One of the speakers said, “Google values the customer, both externally and internally, which makes us well-known as one of the happiest places to work.” The group also showed interest in how Google retains talent in the Bay Area’s competitive environment. The speaker said, “Google provides not only free food and facilities but, most importantly, an open environment that encourages trial-and-error and the exchange of new ideas.”

Fifteen HKUST alumni and company representatives were invited to the Networking Dinner on June 5. It was our honor to have Carey Lai, the President of the HKUSTAA North California Chapter (HKUSTAA-NCC), and other alumni and friends present to share their work experience in the US.

“Every ending is a new beginning, said Prof. Roger Chen. Although the tour has ended, the experiences gained will endure and will provide a bright new start to all who went on it.
