MBA FOR PROFESSIONALS WEEKLY PROGRAM
Lunch Colloquium: Alumni Speaker Series

To encourage knowledge sharing among the MBA community and to strengthen current students’ connections with our alumni, we are proud to introduce the “Alumni Speaker Series,” where senior alumni will be invited to share their experience at our lunch colloquiums on a regular basis.

We were honored that our alumnus Mr. Steve Chiu accepted our invitation to kick off the series. Steve is the current Head of Hong Kong Retail at PIMCO Asia Limited and has nearly 30 years of work experience in the asset management industry. Prior to joining PIMCO, Steve held senior positions in multiple global financial institutions, including Manulife, Bosera Asset Management, AIA Wealth Management and HSBC.

Steve first gave a brief introduction to the wealth management industry and shared his insights. He then introduced the different roles and operations of key players in the industry from the sell side, buy side and distribution. Steve emphasized the importance of compliance controls, which might affect the continuous growth of the sector. He revealed the regulatory structure, for example, explaining the different roles and practices of the regulators in Hong Kong. Further, he explained the structure of asset management firms and let the students know how the various roles are related. He also reminded students that before joining the sector, they should develop a clear view and ample understanding of the industry to explore which area they will be most interested in.

Steve Chiu was glad to share his insights on the asset management industry with students.
Students were eager to interact with Steve Chiu during the Q & A Session for even more useful advice.

As a seasoned interviewer of the HKUST MBA Program, Steve noticed that some MBA candidates had not conducted sufficient research into the asset management industry while they were trying to convince the interviewers that they were well prepared for switching to the industry. Hence, Steve wanted to give some career advice to students who wish to enter this sector and advised them to comprehend the reality of the sector to equip themselves well before making a decision.

Steve’s talk inspired students with a brief yet insightful look into the industry. Students greatly enjoyed the session, as could be seen by their close attention and active participation during the Q & A session. We thanked Steve for sharing his knowledge so brilliantly, and we look forward to another fruitful alumni sharing session in the near future.
