Russia Study Tour

Visiting one of the largest incubation and innovation centers in Russia at The Skolkovo Foundation.
The HKUST MBA students and alumni had a great night with a diverse group of Russian executives and alumni from the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo in a traditional Ukrainian restaurant.
How much do you know about doing business in Russia? A group of MBA students and alumni explored the Russian market during a study tour to Moscow in April.

Partnering with The Moscow School of Management Skolkovo, the four-day intensive program kicked off with two lectures for MBA students and alumni to understand the culture and business environment and give them an economic overview of Russia. The group then travelled around Moscow to visit state-owned organizations and private companies, including VEB.RF, the State’s Corporation in Development and Foreign Economic Affairs; MTS Mobile TeleSystems, a leading telecommunications group in Russia and CIS; Mail.Ru, a large internet-related service corporation; Novatek, one of the largest independent natural gas producers in Russia; and Gazprom Neft, an integrated oil company.

Apart from company visits, the group also visited the Skolkovo Foundation, a large incubation center focusing on a sustainable ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation. The learning portion completed with a sharing panel on investment opportunities between Russia and China.

With various opportunities for learning through company visits and lectures, participants also had a chance to mingle with more than 15 EMBA alumni from The Moscow School of Management Skolkovo and executives of large corporations in Russia, such as Yandex, ROSBANK and Sberbank, in a networking dinner in a traditional Ukrainian restaurant. Of course, the group did not miss out on sightseeing in Moscow, with visits to the famous Kremlin Museum and to St. Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square.

US Study Tour

We were delighted to have alumni in San Francisco and corporate guests to share their valuable US work experience at the networking mixer dinner on the 4th of June.
Students visited the Stanford university campus and had a great chance to sit in the classroom to get a taste of the real “Stanford” life.
Do you know where Google, Apple, Facebook and LinkedIn were founded? San Francisco/Silicon Valley is the heart of innovation and home to many startups, and it is the place of origin of these global giants and innovative technology companies. Thirty-five MBA students from diverse industry backgrounds participated in the US study tour led by Prof. Roger Chen during June block week to explore the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley.

During the five-day tour, the group had valuable opportunities to visit eight companies, including accelerators and incubators Founders Space and Plug & Play, Cloudera, LinkedIn and Google from the technology industry, and Bloomenergy from the green energy business. During these visits, students experienced cutting-edge entrepreneurial thinking and best practices through interaction with entrepreneurs.

The visit to Google was one of the highlights of the tour. It was our pleasure to have four experienced Hong Kong “Googlers” guiding us through various areas of Google: recruitment, artificial intelligence (AI), strategy and engineering. The group was very active in the Q & A session and showed a particularly strong interest in Google’s AI developments. We were also invited to have lunch in the Google café with some Hong Kong Googlers and to walk around the campus to get a taste of the Googlers’ life.

The tour wrapped up with a reflection class, where the team gave a presentation on their experience and the knowledge gained from the company visits on three different levels: personal, organizational and regional. At the end of the class, Prof. Chen raised a thought-provoking question: “Can we REALLY apply San Francisco learning back home?” He summarized the entrepreneurial spirit with a Silicon Valley-style answer that inspired students: “If we don’t try, everything is just a guess.” Even though the tour has ended, the experience in Silicon Valley will have a lifelong impact on students’ innovative thinking.
