HKUST MBA SUNDIAL

Issue #13 (Jan 2022)
Message from Program Director
Four Firsts Get 2022 Off to a Flying Start Despite the pandemic, a resilient spirit over the past 12 months has resulted in a highly productive year for our programs and community

“I am proud to see that over the past 12 months the HKUST MBA community’s go-ahead spirit has remained intact”

In welcoming the new year of 2022, I am proud to see that over the past 12 months the HKUST MBA community’s go-ahead spirit has remained intact, despite the on-going presence of COVID-19 globally. Such spirit has resulted in a host of new avenues for our students and alumni, including four key “firsts” in 2021, and exciting plans ahead.

With the rapid rise of financial technology and pressing issues of climate change and sustainability, I am very happy to report the program’s successful drive to become Asia’s first tech/green MBA. The move opens up significant opportunities for our graduates to lead the way in these areas of core concern to the business world of today and tomorrow. Reflecting this, many of the modules in our curriculum now underscore the importance of both technology and sustainability, providing valuable insights and skills related to programming, cryptocurrency, AI, and also sustainable leadership.
Over 2022, we will be endeavoring to bring more innovative environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) components to the program, including courses, workshops, training, enrichment activities, as well as alumni development. Among them is our ground-breaking collaboration with Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) on an elective for MBA students focusing on “Sustainable Finance with Business Practices”. Through working together with the global markets operator, we have become HKEX’s first university partner in Asia to offer an executive education course in this important area and to jointly nurture the next generation of talent.

Meanwhile, we have continued to explore state-of-the-art education delivery options to widen the reach and flexibility of our programs. We became the first in Asia among the Financial Times’ global top 25 MBAs to launch an online learning mode in 2021, with our inaugural cohort on board for the part-time HKUST Digital MBA for Global Leaders in February 2022. Some 70% of these students come from outside Hong Kong, and possess substantial work experience, helping to enrich and expand our alumni network. We also launched the first virtual classroom in Asia with best-in-class education technology to ensure a leading student experience for our online participants.

On the social front, the HKUST MBA community’s shared commitment and vigor enabled the program team to utilize a period of relative calm amid COVID-19 waves in Hong Kong toward the end of 2021 to gather our alumni and supporters for two large-scale in-person alumni mixers in December. The events were a huge success, drawing over 500 attendees virtually and physically in total and clearly indicating the strong and lasting bonds that our MBA programs foster.

With your support, we look forward to creating more special experiences for alumni and students in the Year of the Tiger.

Wishing you a healthy and prosperous year ahead.
