HKUST MBA SUNDIAL

Issue #10 (Nov 2020)
MESSAGE FROM PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Change the Life of Another

2020 has been a difficult journey for many of us due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our students in particular are facing a lot of uncertainty, given the volatility of the market. Yet even in these troubled times, it is gratifying to see a growing number of MBA alumni returning to the school to offer current students advice, guidance, and support.

In the past few months alone, many alumni have given back to the community in all kinds of ways. Senior alumni who weathered the financial crisis of the last decade shared the mindset and strategies that are needed to survive and thrive during a recession. Overseas alumni explained how businesses and governments have responded to the pandemic in their local markets. Those who are leaders in their fields also shared insider tips and suggestions for job hunting.

At the same time, some alumni mentors have served as “guardian angels” to support students in their personal and professional development. Similarly, many alumni have referred students to jobs, whenever they learned of a suitable opportunity for an MBA graduate. This year alone, approximately 25% of the successful student internships were driven by our alumni.

“To our dear alumni: your contributions, regardless of size or form, will always make a difference and help us to continue the extraordinary legacy of the HKUST MBA program.”

When alumni were asked why they continue to actively participate in the community after graduation, most gave a similar answer: “just as I was once helped by an HKUST MBA alumnus, I now want to help someone myself.”
I believe this explains why we have such a tight MBA community, despite being a university with a relatively short history. The HKUST MBA legacy is built on a sense of belonging and the desire to give. Our alumni often look out for those who are still part of the program, and never fail to help their fellow HKUST MBAers. Even candidates tell us that one of the main reasons they want to join our program is because they are impressed by the passion and support of our alumni, whom they regard as role models.

Therefore, we would like to dedicate this issue to our wonderful alumni, who continue to inspire and transform the lives of our students. We apologize for not being able to feature everyone here: there are simply too many alumni to cover! However, know that we are filled with gratitude for each of them. They are not obliged to give back to the HKUST MBA community but continue to do so, despite the many other commitments in their lives.

To our dear alumni: your contributions, regardless of size or form, will always make a difference and help us to continue the extraordinary legacy of the HKUST MBA program.
