MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Mutual Benefits of Mentoring
September proved a busy month for the HKUST MBA Mentorship Program, with the launch of the new program for 2021/22, as well as a lively closing event for the super-successful 2020/21 program, the largest to date.
Mentors and mentees work as a team to create their art pieces.
With the start of the current academic year, recruitment for alumni mentors and student mentees got underway, with the prospect of a highly rewarding learning experience awaiting both, as illustrated in the sharing below.
Indicating the popularity and value of the program, a record-breaking total of 135 mentors and mentees took part in 2020/21, despite ongoing adaptations required by COVID-19.
Rosa Lin (Part-time MBA, Class of 2007) and registered creative arts therapist delivered a fun-filled workshop for participants.
Ending the previous year’s program on a memorable note, a fun-filled final gathering took place on September 17, bringing participants together. At the event, registered creative arts therapist Rosa Lin (Part-time MBA, Class of 2007) held an Expressive Arts Therapy Experiential Workshop, where mentors and mentees learnt new ways to build rapport, establish a partnership, and release stress in a supportive environment, using visual arts, music and movement, and others.
Many thanks to mentors past, present, and future, for their dedication and commitment to propelling forward the next-generation of HKUST MBA achievers.
Here, 2020/21 mentor Elita Yue and mentee Alvin Wong discuss their key takeaways from joining the program.
Mentor: Elita Yue (Part-time MBA, Class of 2014)
“I have participated in the MBA Mentorship Program for two years in a row now. As a mentor, this program is a great way to stay in touch with young business leaders. With the insights gained from my mentee, I can better understand young team members at my workplace. I also really value the neutral, respectful platform that the mentor-mentee relationship provides, enabling me to share my successes but also disclose my challenges as a manager.”
Mentee: Alvin Wong (Part-time MBA, Class of 2022)
Elita and Alvin networking with mentor-mentee Oscar Lee and Karen Yu to widen the sharing of experience.
“I was fortunate to be able to meet Elita twice for a face-to-face catch-up and once for a small group gathering with another mentor and mentee. Since we work in a similar role and industry, she was very open to sharing her experience and the management skills that enable her to effectively guide her team.
Overall, the program allowed me to see issues through another lens. Not only did I gain valuable advice, but also a life-long friendship. It would be an honor to give back by becoming a mentor in the future.”
