INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM
Global Network Week Students Share

The Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) is a network of top business schools around the world. As the only GNAM member school in Hong Kong, our MBA program furnishes its students with the opportunity to participate in a one-week course on campus at one of the network schools to broaden their international mindset and exposure. This year, we are happy to share with you two stories from current Year 2 students Gabriel Goh and Jenny Chiu.

Gabriel Goh, short-term exchange to the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Israel

Gabriel (central left in front) visited the Terrace Gardens of the Baha’i Faith (a.k.a. the Hanging Gardens of Haifa), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with his classmates.
Gabriel has long sought to explore Israel, famous as a ‘Start-up Nation’. As a short-term exchange student at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Gabriel was excited to gain first-hand experience in the country and learn ways to generate ideas for new ventures. He was notably impressed by the concept of ‘chutzpah’, as he thought the key to entrepreneurial success and to overcoming impossibilities is the best way to understand our goals and take action with solid determination and confidence.

One of the big prizes for Gabriel in this study tour was doubtless building connections with other brilliant minds in the class. “It was an honour and privilege to work alongside with MBA students from the world’s leading universities to problem-solve experiential learning and make those lifelong connections”, Gabriel told us.

Although we might wonder how Gabriel could manage foreign study while being away from his full-time job, Gabriel was proud to share that his employer was supportive of his study. “My company deems that continual professional development would benefit the individuals and organisation”, he added. It’s not hard to understand why Gabriel could stand at ease going for a study tour, and he made the most of it.

Jenny Chiu, short-term exchange to the Yale School of Management, USA

“I cannot think of any networking platform that could provide us with such a chance to get to know 120 MBA students from all over the world as well as local Yale MBA students in a week”, Jenny said.

Jenny was honoured to be one of the 120 students who participated in the GN week at Yale.
One of eight students who represented HKUST at Yale School of Management, Jenny was taken on a journey of exploration through the behavioural science of management. During the week, Jenny was guided to explore various types of behavioural tendencies and their consequences for management from different perspectives. She was quite impressed by the professors and speakers and was glad that she spent 1 intensive week on the topics. A company visit to Hearst highlighted her journey to Yale. Jenny had the opportunity to meet Hearst’s current and former CEO and senior executives and was excited to learn from their valuable insights and professional business experiences.

What amazed Jenny was not just the experiences in learning, but the connections she gained in Yale. She deemed the study tour an eye-opening experience because she had opportunities to participate in classes delivered by top-notch professors, engage in discussions and debates with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and network with more than 120 students from more than 30 countries. These memorable experiences allowed Jenny to end her exchange and her MBA journey on a high note.
